Artificial intelligence continues to evolve within enterprises, with an ambition that now goes beyond simply assisting users: contributing directly to the execution of business processes. Workday and Anthropic have announced a partnership aimed at bringing Claude’s reasoning capabilities closer to Workday Sana’s artificial intelligence agents. The objective is to facilitate the completion of complex tasks in finance and human resources, while preserving companies’ business rules and control mechanisms.
A collaboration to simplify business processes
Through this partnership, Workday and Anthropic aim to enable users to work from their usual environment, whether Sana or Claude. The two platforms will be able to exchange information and tasks through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard designed to facilitate interactions between artificial intelligence systems and external tools.
This approach should make it possible to continue work from one environment to another without losing the context required for its execution. Sana plays an orchestration role in particular: it coordinates the various stages of a process, activates the appropriate agents and organizes the information required for each task. Claude, meanwhile, steps in when additional reasoning capabilities are useful.
The ambition is to streamline operations that typically involve several stakeholders and numerous validation steps. Workday specifically cites compensation cycles and financial closes, some activities of which could be handled more continuously through the orchestration of AI agents.
AI serving financial operations
For finance teams, this collaboration opens up several possibilities. For example, a manager could review invoices containing discrepancies against purchase orders, then approve the relevant transactions directly in Claude or forward the cases to Sana for processing.
Other use cases are being considered around headcount and budget management. A recruiting manager could compare open positions with existing headcount and available budget allocations, then identify internal mobility opportunities. In these various scenarios, artificial intelligence helps facilitate analysis, coordinate actions and accelerate certain stages of the process.
These features illustrate a significant shift: AI is no longer limited to providing an answer to a question. It can also participate in executing a process by mobilizing the appropriate data and tools. However, the potential benefits will depend on the use cases selected, data quality and companies’ ability to integrate these technologies into their practices.
Data governance at the heart of the system
The automation of finance and HR processes naturally raises questions about security, confidentiality and accountability. Decisions related to compensation, headcount or payments require rigorous oversight.
Workday and Anthropic indicate that interactions must comply with the access permissions, business rules and audit controls defined in Workday. Agents must expose to users only the information they are authorized to access. The system also provides for human intervention for certain approvals and the handling of situations requiring special review.
The two companies also wish to enable their customers to create their own agents in Claude using the Workday Agent-Ready Tools. According to the announcement, these tools, available through Workday Extend AI, are intended to facilitate the development of customized agents within an integrated governance framework.
This direction reflects a major challenge for companies: leveraging the growing autonomy of artificial intelligence without relinquishing control over data, operational traceability or human accountability.
Gradual availability for enterprises
The partnership also builds on an existing relationship between the two organizations. Anthropic uses Workday Financials and Workday Human Capital Management for its finance and HR activities. Workday, for its part, has deployed Claude Enterprise and notably uses Claude Code to support its development teams.
The Sana plugin in Claude is accessible to customers participating in the early access program, with general availability expected toward the end of 2026. The Workday Agent-Ready Tools, meanwhile, are announced as generally available through Workday Extend AI.
