Oracle EPM is enhancing the dashboard experience with the introduction of Scrollable Dashboards in Dashboard 2.0. This new option gives users more space to present charts, tables, data grids and other visualizations within a single dashboard.
Until now, Auto-fit mode was based on a fixed canvas. As new components were added, the available space had to be divided between them. This layout could reduce the size of charts or grids and make some information less readable.
With scrollable mode, the dashboard can now extend vertically. Users can scroll down the page to access the various elements while remaining within the same Dashboard 2.0 artifact. This approach therefore offers greater freedom to organize information and keep components sufficiently visible.
More flexible organization
Scrollable mode supports up to 16 components. Unlike Auto-fit, components are positioned manually, making it possible to create a layout suited to the content and the desired reading order.
This option may be particularly useful for financial dashboards that bring together multiple indicators. The same space can thus include KPIs, performance charts, forecasts, detailed tables and operational data, without having to systematically reduce each element to make it fit on a fixed canvas.
Oracle is maintaining Auto-fit mode as the default configuration. It remains suitable for more compact dashboards and automatically adjusts the space between the various components. It may be particularly appropriate for dashboards containing a limited number of charts.
A choice to make during design
The layout model is selected when creating a new Dashboard 2.0. Scrollable mode must be selected before the first components are added. Once the first element has been added, the layout model can no longer be changed.
However, Oracle allows an existing dashboard to be converted from Auto-fit mode to Scrollable. The reverse operation, from Scrollable to Auto-fit, is not available.
When used, the scrollable dashboard displays a vertical scrollbar. Users can therefore progressively navigate through the various sections and return to previously viewed information without having to open another dashboard.
Benefits for financial cockpits
This enhancement may have a practical application in CFO cockpits, where several categories of indicators often need to be brought together in a single view. The additional vertical space makes it possible to present more information while maintaining a readable layout.
The feature is nevertheless subject to a limit of 16 components. Oracle therefore recommends considering the order and prioritization of information before building the dashboard.
With Scrollable Dashboards, Oracle EPM is offering a more flexible approach to presenting data in Dashboard 2.0. The goal is not to replace Auto-fit, but to give designers an alternative when the amount of content requires more space and a more controlled vertical layout.
